Carry a transition object to the next area
When to use this goal
For young students who need something concrete to understand where they are going next, often students who do not yet follow spoken or picture directions alone. Present levels decide fit, not age. Pick objects that clearly stand for each activity (a spoon for snack, a book for story time).
- Baseline
- For one week, record 6 transitions a day: the object used, whether the student went to the right area, and the support needed. Try a few objects first to see which ones the student links to activities.
- Tips
- Use the same object for the same activity every day. As the student succeeds, pair the object with a photo and then move toward a picture schedule. Give the student time to hold and look at the object before expecting movement.
- Limits
- Objects suit a set number of activities; they do not scale to a full secondary schedule. The goal does not measure how the student takes part once there.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when an adult hands them a transition object that stands for the next activity, the student will carry the transition object to the matching activity area and place it in the bin there independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily, 6 transitions.
Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Transitions Between Activities.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
