Hand out one item to each person
When to use this goal
For students who are building one-to-one correspondence and need it in a real routine, such as handing out cups, papers or instruments to a group. Present levels in matching objects one to one decide readiness. The routine changes with age; the skill is the same.
- Baseline
- An opportunity is correct when every person or place ends with exactly one item. Record whether the student got the right number first (the counting version) or handed out from the pile until all had one.
- Tips
- Use the class job chart so the routine happens every day. For older students, the same skill shows up as setting tables in a cafe program or placing one handout at each seat.
- Limits
- Group size changes from day to day; record it. Does not show counting beyond the group size.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a snack, table-setting or materials routine for a group of 3 to 8 people, the student will take out the number of items needed and place one at each place or give one to each person independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 consecutive school days, as measured by direct observation collected daily during the routine.

Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Number Sense.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
