Pick up finger foods to self-feed
When to use this goal
For young children who are fed by an adult and are starting to bring food to the mouth on their own. Observed snack times and the feeding plan's allowed foods, not age, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Offer eight pieces across a snack and count how many the child picks up and brings to the mouth alone. Note grasp (whole hand or fingertips) and whether the child releases food into the mouth or needs help.
- Tips
- Finger feeding builds the hand skills and confidence that spoon use grows from. Let the child choose which piece and when; stop when the child shows they are done.
- Limits
- Food textures, liquid thickness, positioning for safe swallowing and any swallowing precautions come from the student's feeding or swallowing plan, which this goal never changes. Piece size and food type must follow the plan; never offer foods the plan does not allow. The count does not measure intake.

- Record up to 8 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
