Move small objects from palm to fingertips
When to use this goal
For students who use two hands or the table surface to reposition small objects, drop items while trying to adjust them, or cannot turn a pencil to use the eraser. Base the choice on observation of how the student handles coins, beads, and counters.
- Baseline
- Run five trials with the same object size on two separate days. Score a trial as correct only if every object moves to the fingertips without help from the other hand, the body, or the table. Note the object size, because larger items are easier to translate and the target should name the size used.
- Tips
- Use items the student already handles in class (counters, coins for money practice, bingo chips) so the data collection fits inside instruction. The pencil-flip behavior is the classroom payoff; include it as a second behavior once translation with coins is steady.
- Limits
- Does not measure speed. If a student can do the task but takes a long time, switch to a frequency count of objects placed per 30 seconds. Students with limited hand mobility may need a different grasp pattern rather than this skill.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given five coins or counters placed in the palm of the dominant hand, the student will independently move the objects one at a time from the palm to the fingertips and place each in a container without using the other hand or the table in at least 4 of 5 trials, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during OT or a math manipulatives activity.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fine Motor Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
