Stabilize paper with the helper hand while writing or cutting
When to use this goal
For students whose paper slides, rotates, or crumples because the non-dominant hand rests in the lap, on the chair, or on the head during table work. Base the choice on observation during writing and cutting; this is often the missing piece under messy handwriting.
- Baseline
- Observe five table tasks and score each as yes or no: was the helper hand on the paper for at least most of the task without a prompt? Note whether the student uses a slant board or a clipboard, both of which reduce the need for the helper hand and should be named in the condition if used.
- Tips
- Pairs well with any handwriting or cutting goal; collect both on the same sample. If the student's trunk control is weak, the helper hand may be propping the body; check seating with the OT or PT before treating this as a habit.
- Limits
- A yes or no score hides partial use. If the student uses the hand on and off, switch to counting prompts needed per task. Does not measure the quality of the written or cut product.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a writing or coloring task on loose paper, the student will place the helper hand flat on the paper and keep it there for the task independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during a table task.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
