Open and close screw-top lids and twist fasteners
When to use this goal
For students who cannot open a water bottle, a glue stick, or a marker cap, or who twist with the whole arm instead of the wrist and fingers. Base the choice on a trial with the containers the student meets each day.
- Baseline
- Present each item twice (open and close) and record success and which hand turns versus holds. Loosen each lid slightly first on one trial to separate strength from the twisting motion; if the student succeeds with a loosened lid, the goal is strength and the support options should include a grip pad.
- Tips
- Water bottles and glue sticks give several real opportunities every day. Teach 'hold with one hand, turn with the other' and the direction rule, and record whether the student remembers the direction without a prompt.
- Limits
- Lid tightness varies with who closed it last, so the condition should state whether lids are standard-tight or loosened. Does not measure speed; a student who opens the bottle after a 2-minute struggle still scores as successful.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a water bottle, a glue stick, and a marker with its cap on, the student will unscrew and screw back on each lid or cap independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during snack, class, or OT.
Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
