Swim a pool width with a front crawl
When to use this goal
For students in a school or community swim program who can move in the water but not swim a width with a coordinated stroke. Fit depends on a pool trial, not grade. Flotation belts and noodles are equipment adaptations, not failures.
- Baseline
- Score five widths: completed with strokes, completed by walking or standing, or stopped. Record the flotation used. The lifeguard and swim instructor set safe practice rules.
- Tips
- Swimming is a strong lifetime activity and a safety skill. Keep the same pool width for probes. Pair with mt-pe-029 for floating.
- Limits
- Requires pool access and trained staff. Students with seizures or medical needs need a written water safety plan.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, in the shallow end of a school or community pool, swimming a 15-yard width, the student will independently swim the width using alternating arm strokes and a flutter kick without standing up in at least 4 of 5 trials, across 3 consecutive swim sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected 5 widths per swim session.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
