Bear crawl and crab walk across the gym
When to use this goal
For young students who collapse, sit down, or switch to walking during animal walks in PE warm-ups and relays, which shows limited arm and core strength. Fit depends on a gym trial, not grade.
- Baseline
- Score five lanes of each walk and note where the student stops. Crab walk is usually harder than bear crawl.
- Tips
- Animal walks are a fun way to build strength. Relays add motivation once lanes are steady.
- Limits
- Not for students with wrist or shoulder restrictions without PT input.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a PE warm-up with a 20-foot bear crawl lane, the student will independently move the full lane in the named animal walk without the knees or bottom touching the floor in at least 4 of 5 trials, across 3 consecutive weekly PE classes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected 5 lanes per PE class.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
