Set a light ball back to a partner
When to use this goal
For students who catch a light ball well and are ready to redirect it with two hands overhead. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. A balloon or beach ball slows the ball down enough for students who need more time to track it.
- Baseline
- Give 8 tosses on two days and score a volley only when the student redirects the ball upward with two hands without holding it, and it travels toward the partner. Note whether misses come from tracking, timing or hand shape.
- Tips
- Count a toss that the partner throws out of reach as a no-trial, not a miss. Keep-it-up games give many chances in a few minutes and let peers share the fun of a long volley. Move to a lighter volleyball only when beach ball volleys are steady.
- Limits
- The template counts redirected balls, not the overhead set form used in volleyball. Balloons move very differently from balls, so record which was used. It does not cover the forearm pass.

- Record up to 8 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
