Match letters and words that look alike
When to use this goal
For students who confuse visually similar letters (m and n, h and n) or words (was and saw, on and no) in matching tasks, before or alongside reading instruction. Base the choice on a matching probe with similar-looking items; letter naming is not required for this goal.
- Baseline
- Give 20 items with similar-looking distractors on two days and record which pairs are confused. Compare with a probe using dissimilar distractors; if the student is accurate with dissimilar items, the problem is fine discrimination and the progression should start with fewer, more different choices.
- Tips
- Coordinate with the reading teacher; this goal supports letter knowledge but does not replace it. Use the same font as the classroom's instructional materials. Many students move through this quickly once a strategy (look at the first part, then the rest) is taught.
- Limits
- Matching does not require naming or reading, so progress here may not show up in reading scores. If the student also reverses letters when writing, see the handwriting reversals template.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a row with one target letter and four choices, including two visually similar letters, the student will mark the choice that matches the target exactly independently with at least 90% accuracy on matches correct, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly on a 20-item matching probe.
Baseline: 55% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Visual-Motor & Visual-Perceptual Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
