Draw a line to connect matching items on a worksheet
When to use this goal
For students who cannot draw a line from an item in one column to its match in the other without the line wandering into the wrong item, or who lose track of which item they started from. Base the choice on matching worksheets from class.
- Baseline
- Score three matching worksheets and count lines that reach the correct match cleanly. Separate motor errors (the line reaches the right item but crosses others) from matching errors (the wrong item); only the first is a visual-motor concern and the condition should use matches the student knows.
- Tips
- Matching worksheets are everywhere in early grades, so the data are free. Teach 'find it, point, then draw' as a routine. This skill carries into drawing lines on graphs and connecting labels to diagram parts later.
- Limits
- Does not measure whether the student knows the matches; use known pairs. Crowded worksheets raise the difficulty; name the spacing in the condition. Not a useful goal past the primary grades.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a worksheet with 5 pictures in the left column and their matches in the right column, the student will independently draw a line from each item on the left to its match on the right without touching other items with at least 90% accuracy on lines drawn to the correct match without touching other items, on 3 consecutive weekly work samples, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly from class matching worksheets.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Visual-Motor & Visual-Perceptual Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
