Ask before hugging or touching a peer

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who hug, lean on, or touch peers without asking, often out of affection. Present levels decide fit. The goal adds a choice and a question; it does not stop the student from showing affection.

Baseline
Record 10 moments when the student wanted to touch a peer and whether they asked first. Note who the peers are; asking may already happen with some peers and not others.
Tips
Teach the whole class the choice card so every student has options. A peer saying no is a correct and successful practice, not a failure. Family greeting customs vary; the goal is about school peers.
Limits
Opportunities vary by day. The goal does not cover adults; school staff should model asking too. Not a goal to reduce affection.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during greetings, recess, and group work, when the student wants to hug, hold hands with, or touch a peer, the student will ask the peer first (such as "Can I hug you?") or offer a choice (hug, high five, wave) and do what the peer picks independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected 3 times per week.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Relationships, Boundaries & Personal Safety.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
