Hand a picture to a partner to request a preferred item
When to use this goal
For students who do not yet use words, signs, or symbols to request and who are beginning a picture exchange approach. The first skill is the exchange itself: picking up a picture and placing it in a partner's hand. Base the choice on a preference assessment and the SLP's communication evaluation.
- Baseline
- Run a preference assessment first so the items are truly wanted. Set up 10 opportunities with the item in view and record whether the student exchanges the picture, reaches for the item instead, or does nothing. Record the prompt level needed for each.
- Tips
- Each set-up with a preferred item is one opportunity. Score independent when the student exchanges the picture without a physical prompt or a verbal cue such as "What do you want?"; the item itself is the cue. Give the item immediately after every exchange. Two adults are usual at the start: one receives the picture, one prompts from behind. Fade prompts from the end of the chain backward.
- Limits
- Picture exchange is one entry point; some students start with a device or sign instead, and the team may move to a robust system quickly. Single-picture requesting does not show vocabulary or commenting. The template does not prescribe a program and does not diagnose.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
