Build a two-symbol request such as "I want" plus an item
When to use this goal
For students who exchange or select single pictures reliably and are ready to combine a request symbol with an item symbol on a sentence strip or device. Base the choice on single-symbol data.
- Baseline
- Set up 10 opportunities with several items available and record whether the student produces one symbol, two symbols in order, or none, and the prompt level. Confirm the student discriminates among the item pictures (chooses the one that matches what they then accept).
- Tips
- Each opportunity is a moment the student wants something. Score independent when both symbols are produced in order without a prompt. Honor every request made this way, even for items you then negotiate. On a device, model the same two-hit message every time you hand over an item. The order "want" plus item matters less than consistency.
- Limits
- Requesting is one function; commenting, refusing, and asking questions need their own goals (sl-aac-007, sl-aac-018, sl-aac-020). Two-symbol strips do not show vocabulary growth. The template does not prescribe a program.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a sentence strip, an "I want" symbol, and pictures of 5 or more available items during snack or play, the student will combine the request symbol and the item symbol and give or show the message to the partner independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during snack or play.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
