Label objects and pictures with signs
When to use this goal
For students using sign who have a few need signs and are building a vocabulary of nouns and actions they can name. Base the choice on the current sign vocabulary count. Speech alongside sign is always accepted.
- Baseline
- List the signs the student already produces and the ones the team wants next (useful at home and school). Probe 20 target items and record each production and the prompt level. Keep a running vocabulary list; the count over time is useful present-levels data.
- Tips
- Score correct when the sign or its agreed approximation is produced without a model. Choose vocabulary the student wants to talk about. Pair every sign with the spoken word. Record the total number of signs in use each month as a secondary measure.
- Limits
- Naming on request is different from using signs spontaneously; pair with sl-aac-013 or a frequency goal. Sign vocabulary alone does not give the student a full language unless the partners sign fluently; the team weighs this. The template does not decide the system.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 objects or pictures from the student's target sign vocabulary (such as animals, foods, family members), the student will produce the sign for each object or picture when asked "What's this?" or when the item is shown independently with at least 80% accuracy on items labeled with the target sign, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 25% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
