Point to the object or picture when shown a sign
When to use this goal
For students in a signing environment who need to show they recognize signs directed at them, which lets adults give directions and choices in sign. Base the choice on the student's receptive vocabulary.
- Baseline
- Probe 20 signs in a field of 3 with no spoken word and record each selection. Chance in a field of 3 is 33%. Compare with sign plus speech to see how much the spoken word carries. For students who are deaf or hard of hearing, coordinate with the teacher of the deaf about the sign system used.
- Tips
- Score correct when the student selects the matching item. Present the sign alone for probe data (sign plus speech is a support). Rotate item positions so the student cannot learn a position. Expand the field as accuracy grows.
- Limits
- Matching a sign to a picture is a structured task and does not show following signed directions in real time. Chance level depends on field size; report it. The template does not decide the sign system.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a field of 3 objects or pictures and a sign for one of them, 20 trials, the student will point to or pick up the object or picture that matches the sign independently with at least 85% accuracy on signed words matched to the correct item, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
