Share news about their day or weekend using three or more symbols

When to use this goal

For students whose device use is mostly single words and who want to tell people about their lives (what they did, who they saw, how it was). Base the choice on a device language sample and the family's help with topics.

Baseline
Ask the student about their weekend on 5 occasions with a family note available and record the message length and content. Set up a home-school communication photo system so there is something to talk about and so the partner can understand references. Note whether the student uses the photo as a crutch or a prompt.
Tips
Each sharing opportunity is one trial, scored correct when the message has three or more symbols and conveys an event. Family photos or a daily note give partners the context to respond. Messages can be built on the device, with the partner reading them aloud if the device does not speak. Grammar is not scored.
Limits
Depends on families sending information; without it the partner cannot verify or respond well. Three symbols is an arbitrary line; adjust to the student. The template does not measure narrative structure (see narrative-language).

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during morning meeting or a sharing time, with a family note or photo about the weekend available, the student will tell about an event using three or more symbols that include who or what and something about it (such as "I go park" or "saw grandma fun") independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
