Choose an activity or item from a set of choices

When to use this goal

For students who do not yet make clear choices and whose days are planned entirely by adults. Choosing between two to five options with a symbol, object, eye gaze, or device is a foundation for all other communication. Base the choice on the student's most reliable selection method.

Baseline
Offer 10 choices with a preferred and a non-preferred option and record whether the student selects and then accepts what they chose. A student who always picks the same side may be choosing by position; rotate positions. Try objects, photos, and symbols to find what the student recognizes.
Tips
Each offer is one opportunity, scored independent when the student selects without a prompt and then engages with the chosen item (which confirms the choice was real). Always honor the choice. Build choices into the whole day (which book, which color, which song), not just therapy. Record the mode (touch, eye gaze, device) for consistency.
Limits
Choosing requires preferences among the options; two disliked options give no information. Position bias and visual access must be checked. The template does not measure vocabulary or sentence building.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a choice of 2 to 5 leisure activities shown as objects, photos, or symbols during free time, the student will select one option by touching, pointing, looking at, or pressing it, and then engage with the chosen item independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
