Answer a classmate's question with the device

When to use this goal

For students who answer adults on their device but miss or ignore questions from classmates, who often ask quickly and move on. Base the choice on observation in group work and play. Peers may need coaching to wait and to ask questions the student can answer.

Baseline
Observe six peer questions and record whether the student answered, answered after an adult repeat, or did not answer before the peer moved on. Note how long peers waited; a short wait is often the main barrier.
Tips
Each peer question is one opportunity, scored independent when the student answers before the peer moves on, without an adult repeating it. Coach peers as part of the plan. Any mode that answers the question counts.
Limits
The number of peer questions varies; peer coaching may be needed just to create opportunities. The goal measures response, not quality of the answer.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during small-group or partner work in class when a peer asks the student a question, the student will answer the peer's question with a device message, sign, gesture, or low-tech board independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 3 of 4 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
