Point to share something interesting
When to use this goal
For children who point to request but not yet to share, or who use no point at all. Present levels from play and book observation decide fit. A child who cannot isolate a finger may point with the whole hand or another body part; define the form in the goal.
- Baseline
- Tally points across three 10-minute sessions. Record each as a point to share (the student wants the partner to notice) or a point to request (the student wants the item). Only sharing points count toward this goal; requesting points belong in sl-ec-007.
- Tips
- A share point is complete when the student points and the partner responds to the object; gaze to the partner is not required. Respond to every share with a short comment that names the thing ("A big truck"). Books with lift-the-flap or surprise pages create natural moments to share.
- Limits
- Counts vary with the student's interest in the materials; keep the setting and partner consistent. The goal measures starting shared attention, not vocabulary. Children with motor needs may need a different defined gesture, chosen with the OT or PT.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute shared picture-book time with an adult, with books chosen from the student's interests, the student will point (with a finger, whole hand, or other defined body movement) to something interesting to share it with the partner independently at least 4 times per 10-minute shared book or outdoor session, on 4 of 5 observed sessions, as measured by frequency recording collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 0 times per 10-minute shared book or outdoor session.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 10-minute shared book or outdoor session.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
