Request an action such as go or open
When to use this goal
For children who request objects but not actions, or who pull an adult's hand to make things happen. Present levels decide fit. Action words (go, up, open, push, turn, again) let a child direct play and routines.
- Baseline
- Pick 3 to 5 action targets. Set up 10 opportunities and record the form used, the cue needed, and whether the student pulled the adult's hand instead. Hand-leading is a real request; note it as the starting point.
- Tips
- Do the action right away after each request. Rotate the action words so the student uses more than one. Hand-leading is a strength to build on; pair it with the word or sign rather than stopping it.
- Limits
- The goal measures requests during set-up routines; check carryover to free play. Children with motor speech needs may rely on sign or a device for some words; accept them.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a play routine with a ramp, swing, or wind-up toy, when the partner gets ready and pauses before the action, the student will request the action with a word, approximation, sign, picture, or device message (such as "go", "up", "open") independently in at least 7 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected 3 times per week.
Baseline: 1 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
