Name familiar objects and family members

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For children who use some words and are ready to name familiar things when asked or shown. Present levels decide fit. Choose 10 targets with the family: favorite foods, toys, pets, and people's names or family words.

Baseline
Show the 10 chosen items once each and record the response and cue level. Ask the family which words the student uses at home; include some words in the home language if the family uses one.
Tips
Accept names in any language the student uses at home. Define which approximations count. Swap targets once mastered so the list keeps growing. Names of family members matter to families; include them.
Limits
Naming on request is one use of words; spontaneous use is measured in sl-ec-023. A set list does not show overall vocabulary size. Not a receptive goal.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID sl-ec-024.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 familiar real objects or family photos shown one at a time with "What's this?" or "Who's that?", the student will name the object or person with a word, a consistent approximation, a sign, or a device selection independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
