Respond to name from across the room

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For children who respond to their name only up close or not at all during play. Present levels and a hearing check decide fit. Any response counts: turning, pausing, coming over, vocalizing, or answering.

Baseline
Make sure a recent hearing screening is on file. Call the name 10 times across a few days, spread out so it does not become a drill, and record any response within about 5 seconds. Note the distance and how engaged the student was.
Tips
Call the name once, in a normal voice, then wait about 5 seconds. Give a reason to respond (a quick fun moment, a turn) every time. Never require the student to look at the adult; pausing, turning the body, or coming over all count.
Limits
Responding to name is not a hearing test; refer hearing concerns to the audiologist. Calling the name too often makes it less meaningful. This goal does not cover following a direction after the name.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during free play, when a familiar adult calls the student's name once from 6 to 10 feet away in a normal voice, the student will respond to their name by pausing, turning their head or body toward the adult, moving toward the adult, or vocalizing or answering independently in at least 7 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily across routines.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
