Respond to prompts during shared book reading
When to use this goal
For preschool students who listen to books but say little during reading. Interactive reading with adult prompts (finish the sentence, what is this, what is happening, have you ever) is an evidence-based way to grow expressive language. Base the choice on classroom observation and a language sample.
- Baseline
- Read a familiar book with 10 planned prompts and record each response. Note which prompt types (completion, what, open-ended, linking to the child's life) get answers. Use the same book for baseline and later probes, plus a new book to check generalization.
- Tips
- Each planned prompt is one opportunity. Score correct when the response fits the page, in any language or mode. Praise and expand every response. Teach families and classroom staff the prompts so practice happens daily; send home the same books when possible.
- Limits
- Familiar books get more responses than new ones; record which was used. Group reading gives fewer turns per child. The goal does not measure story retell or comprehension.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute small-group or one-to-one shared book reading in which the adult pauses with completion, wh-, and open-ended prompts, the student will respond to the adult's prompt with a word, phrase, sign, or device message that fits the page independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
