Decline an option and choose another

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who accept whatever is offered, or who show they do not want something only by pushing it away or leaving. Present levels in communication decide the response mode (word, sign, gesture, device message).

Baseline
Plan 5 offers of an item the student is known to dislike, with other choices shown. Record the response (accepts, pushes away, leaves, declines with a message) and whether a different option was chosen.
Tips
Honor every no right away; that is what teaches the skill. For required tasks, offer a choice inside the task instead (which one first, where to sit) rather than an option that cannot be declined.
Limits
Only works with options the student is free to decline. Planned offers of disliked items should be brief and respectful.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when offered an option the student does not want, such as a food, task or activity, at a planned choice point, the student will decline the option with a word, sign, gesture or device message and choose another from the choices shown independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at planned choice points, summarized weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Determination.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
