State own preference during a group decision

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who go along with whatever the group or a louder peer wants, even when they have a clear preference. Present levels in expressive language and comfort speaking in groups, not grade, decide the setting used first.

Baseline
Observe 5 group decisions and record whether the student shared a preference before the decision was made. If the student shares only in private afterward, note it; that preference exists and the setting is the barrier.
Tips
Agreeing with the group is fine once the student has said what they wanted. Plan group decisions on purpose so data are regular. A written or device message counts the same as speech.
Limits
Group dynamics differ from week to week; record who was in the group. Does not measure negotiating or persuading, which belong in social goals.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a small-group decision in class or a club, such as choosing a project topic or an outing, the student will state own preference with a reason and say whether they can go along with the group's final choice independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection periods, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during planned group decisions.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Determination.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
