Set and keep a personal screen time limit

When to use this goal

For students who lose track of time on games, videos or social media, so homework or sleep slips. Present levels in using a timer or alarm decide fit. The student sets the limit; adults help plan, not impose.

Baseline
For one week, have the student log start and stop times without a limit. Use the log to choose a starting limit with the student. Count a day as a success when the timer was set and the stop happened within two minutes.
Tips
Student choice is the core: the student picks the limit and the replacement activity. Built-in screen time tools can do the logging. Home data rely on families; agree on a simple log.
Limits
Home data are self-reported or family-reported. The goal does not judge what the student does on screens.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during evening free time at home, with a limit the student chose and a phone or tablet timer, the student will set a timer for their chosen limit, stop when it ends, and log the stop time on a tracking sheet or app independently in at least 6 of 7 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily, summarized weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Digital Literacy & Online Safety.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
