Answer a simple question about the story at circle time

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For children who attend to the story but do not answer when asked a simple what or who question about it in the group. Base the choice on present levels in answering questions one-to-one and in communication mode; the speech area covers question types in depth.

Baseline
Ask one question a day for 5 days and record whether the child answered correctly in any mode, answered incorrectly, or did not respond. Also check one-to-one; a child who answers alone but not at circle has a group-participation gap, not a comprehension gap.
Tips
Ask the child a question they can answer, early in the questions, with the picture visible. Accept any mode. Choral responses do not count; the question is asked to the child. Coordinate with the SLP on question types.
Limits
One question per day gives slow data; the summary every five opportunities helps. Story difficulty varies; keep books at the child's level during data collection.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after a picture book is read at circle, when asked a what or who question with the picture shown, the student will answer the question with a word, sign, picture, or device independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at circle time, one question per day, summarized every five.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Preschool & Kindergarten Readiness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
