Use a spoon and fork to eat without spilling
When to use this goal
For students who eat with their fingers past the age their peers use utensils, hold the spoon in a fist with the palm up, or spill most of each scoop. Base the choice on observation at snack and lunch; grasp pattern and the amount spilled set the starting target.
- Baseline
- Watch three meals and count scoops or spears that reach the mouth with little or no spill out of the first ten attempts. Note the grasp (fisted versus fingers) and whether the student switches to fingers partway through. Try an adapted utensil during baseline so the team knows whether equipment alone solves it.
- Tips
- Write the behavior so an adult can score the first ten bites and then stop; whole-meal observation is not practical. Coordinate with the family on utensil type so home and school match. This is a mealtime access goal, not a feeding therapy goal; chewing and swallowing concerns belong to the appropriate specialist.
- Limits
- Food texture changes difficulty every day, so the condition names a food type. Does not address picky eating, mealtime behavior, or oral-motor skills.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during lunch, given a spoon and a bowl of food that holds together (yogurt, applesauce, mashed food), the student will scoop food with the spoon and bring it to the mouth with no more than a small spill independently in at least 8 of 10 trials, across 3 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by direct observation collected weekly at lunch or snack, scoring the first 10 scoops or bites.
Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
