Take off and put back marker caps
When to use this goal
For young students who cannot pull off or push on marker and glue stick caps, so markers dry out and adults spend art time opening supplies. Fit depends on a trial with the class's own markers, not age.
- Baseline
- Use six of the class's own supplies and score each for off and on. Capping is often harder than uncapping; record both. Note whether the student stabilizes with the other hand.
- Tips
- Clean-up time gives many chances each day. Markers in a stand let the student use one hand for the cap. This also builds the pull-apart movement for opening containers.
- Limits
- Cap snugness differs across brands; keep the probe set the same. Does not measure drawing or writing.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given the class markers and glue sticks during an art or writing activity, the student will pull the cap off, use the item, and push the cap back on until it clicks independently on at least 5 of 6 items, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during art or writing time.
Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
