Squeeze a spray bottle to water plants
When to use this goal
For young students with weak grip who cannot squeeze a spray bottle trigger, glue bottle, or hole punch, and who would benefit from a classroom job that builds strength. Fit depends on a trial with the class spray bottle, not grade.
- Baseline
- Count full sprays in 1 minute with the class bottle on two days. Note whether the student uses one finger, two fingers, or the whole hand, and whether they switch hands from fatigue.
- Tips
- A real job makes repetition meaningful. Only water goes in the bottle. Counting sprays is easy for the classroom teacher to do.
- Limits
- Measures repetitions, not precision. Students with joint conditions need OT guidance on how much squeezing is safe.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a classroom job of watering plants with a spray bottle, the student will squeeze the trigger with the fingers to spray each plant independently at least 12 times per 1-minute classroom job, on 3 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly during the classroom job.
Baseline: 3 times per 1-minute classroom job.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fine Motor Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 1-minute classroom job.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
