Take side breaths during freestyle laps

9-12, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For swimmers who can swim a front crawl width but stop, stand or lift the whole head forward to breathe. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. Useful for students joining a school or community swim team or a lap swim routine.

Baseline
Watch the first six breaths of one length on two days and score each as a side breath without stopping, or as a lift, stop or stand. Note whether the student breathes to one side only.
Tips
Count each breath taken as one opportunity. Breathing to the preferred side every two or three strokes is fine. Pair with a lap swim routine goal for students heading toward community fitness swimming.
Limits
Scores breathing only, not the full stroke. Pool depth and crowding change comfort. It does not replace water safety supervision.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 25-yard freestyle length in a lap lane, the student will independently breathe by rolling the head to the side with one ear in the water and return the face down without stopping the stroke in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive swim days, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during swim sessions.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sport & Game Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
