Wave or signal hello and goodbye

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For children who do not yet greet familiar people in any mode. Present levels and family routines decide fit. Any clear signal counts: a wave, a sign, a sound, a device message, a word, or a movement toward the person.

Baseline
Record 8 natural greetings across arrival, departure, and visitors over a few days. Note whether the student responds in any mode, after a model, or not at all, and which people get a response.
Tips
Accept every mode the student uses; the goal is the social signal, not a spoken word. The student does not need to look at the person. Ask families what greeting is used at home so the classroom can match it.
Limits
Greetings happen a few times a day, so data build slowly; pool across adults. Not a conversation goal. Some families do not wave as a greeting; use the family's form.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at arrival and departure, when a familiar adult or peer greets the student by name with "Hi" or "Bye", the student will greet or say goodbye by waving, signing, vocalizing, selecting a device message, or saying the word independently in at least 6 of 8 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected daily at arrival and departure.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
