Take a sound turn in the partner's pause
When to use this goal
For children who vocalize but not in response to a partner, or who vocalize over the partner. Present levels decide fit. Vocal turns can be sounds, babble, approximations, or words; the goal is the back-and-forth timing.
- Baseline
- Tally vocal turns that fall in the partner's pause across three 10-minute samples. Tally separately sounds made over the partner or after the student has moved on, since those show the timing is not there yet.
- Tips
- Count each vocal turn in a pause after the partner's turn. Copy the student's sounds to keep the exchange going. Longer back-and-forth chains are a good sign; note the longest chain in each session.
- Limits
- Turn counts depend on how much the partner pauses; keep the pause length the same. This goal measures timing, not words. Not a conversation goal for children who already use phrases.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute face-to-face play or rhyme routine, when the partner makes a sound or short word and then pauses about 5 seconds, the student will take a vocal turn (a sound, babble, word approximation, or word) during the partner's pause independently at least 10 times per 10-minute play routine, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by frequency recording collected each therapy session.
Baseline: 2 times per 10-minute play routine.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 10-minute play routine.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
