State a preference about living options

9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students 16 to 21 whose living plans after school are being made mostly by others. Present levels in communication, and what living options the student has seen, decide how options are presented.

Baseline
Ask in different settings and with different adults over 2 or 3 sessions. Note whether the stated preference stays the same; changing preferences are fine but worth discussing with the family.
Tips
Give real exposure first: tours, videos, talking with adults who live in each type of home. The student's preference informs the independent living postsecondary goal; families and adult services decide together what is possible.
Limits
Stating a preference does not make it available; funding and supports differ by state. Some students need many experiences before a preference means much.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after visiting or viewing two or more living options, such as living with family, sharing an apartment or a supported living home, the student will state a preferred living option with two reasons tied to own routines or needs independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice monthly.
